SPECIALIST LESSONS

We are extremely lucky in Year 2 to have parts of our curriculum delivered by specialist teachers. Please find below, the days of the week in which your child is accessing areas of the curriculum delivered by specialist teachers:

  2SC 2LM
PE Tuesday/Wednesday Tuesday/Friday
Music Wednesday Tuesday
Spanish Friday Friday

Year 2 also enjoy ‘Forest School’ sessions with Mr Motte on a Tuesday, for a series of 6 weekly sessions at some point this year. Only 10 children will attend Forest School from a class each term. When your child is due to start Forest School, you will receive a letter to let you know. When it is your child’s turn to attend Forest School, please remember that they are able to wear their Forest School clothes to school for the day.

TOPICS FOR THE YEAR

In Year 2, our learning continues to be thematic. Here is an outline of our topics for the year:

AUTUMN 1 All At Sea

A study of the SS Forfarshire disaster and the role Grace Darling played in the rescue.

AUTUMN 2 Meerkat Madness

In this topic we look at where Meerkats live and how they behave. We even get to visit the Meerkats at Marwell Zoo to conduct a study of their behaviours.

SPRING 1 Mini Masterchef

The children learn about the importance of healthy eating through our Power of Reading text ‘Burger Boy,' by Alan Durant. They get to make a variety of healthy snacks including veggie burgers.

SPRING 2 Tangled Tales

In this topic we study a number of traditional fairy tales as well as some twisted versions before we create our own 'tangled tales.'

SUMMER 1 Art Attack

A study of Paris and the attractions in this city. They learn about William the detective cat who solves a crime.

SUMMER 2 Fire!

The children will learn about the disaster that struck London, in 1666. They will learn about why Samuel Pepys is still famous to this day!

HOME LEARNING

You will find all the online logins stuck into the front of your child’s reading record. They should have one for Mathletics, Oxford Reading Buddy, Purple Mash and TT Rockstars. Please access and use these websites as much as possible. Children will receive physical certificates when they reach silver or gold levels on Mathletics and these will be celebrated in our Friday ‘Celebration Assembly’.

Homework

Your child will be set homework on a Friday and the expectation is that this is completed by the following Thursday. These tasks will include two Mathletics activities, linked to our classroom learning, and a spelling task on Purple Mash.

As well as this, we will set a project each half-term based on our current topic. We will give at least three-four weeks to complete this and the homework will most likely be a creative project.

Reading

Your child will be given 2 reading books suited to their reading level on a Friday. These should be read by the child and returned by the following Thursday. Please make any comments in the reading record for your child’s teacher to see. We would hope to see at least 3 comments a week, to see that our children are reading regularly at home, as well as in school. Please make sure your child’s reading record is in their school bag each day.

As well as these two books, your child will bring home a ‘Read to me’ book. This book is to spark your child’s pleasure for reading. You might like to read a page each or an adult at home might like to read the whole book to them. The most important thing is that this is a special time for you both to enjoy a book together. This book will also need to be returned the following Thursday to ensure there are enough books to rotate around the class.

REWARDS

In Year 2, our children earn  Dojo Points. The top scorer at the end of each day is the ‘Dojo Hero’ the following day and gets to sit in the comfy chair!

These rewards are given out when children are…

  • Ready to learn (e.g. showing good listening skills – listening to teachers and each other)
  • Trying their best and working hard (e.g. persevering when things are tricky, sharing their ideas in lessons, taking care over their presentation, using resources and equipment to help them, working well with others)
  • Kind and caring towards others (e.g. helping someone who is stuck or lonely, caring for someone who is hurt, supporting someone else with their learning).
