The KS3 requirements for English are contained within the two years at Iford (Years 7 and 8). The course contains a full range of experience in English, based upon the principal skills of Reading, Writing and Speaking. Pupils will be assessed at regular intervals using the National Assessment Objectives for KS3. There are also opportunities for broader experiences in English, including a visit to the Central Library and visiting speakers.
Pupils at KS4 study the AQA Specification A GCSE. At the end of Year 11, most students are entered for two separate subjects, English Language and English Literature, although both disciplines are taught as a combined course during the English lessons. A minority of students drop the Literature element in Year11 and focus on a single English GCSE. Both courses are of three years’ duration and opportunities are offered for extra qualifications such as Function Skills and the Entry Level Certificate, where appropriate.
