In ICT and Computing our aim is to help students meet the challenges offered by technology. This encompasses; basic digital literacy skills required to live and work in a modern world that is constantly changing, aspects of creative use of ICT Tools to communicate and present ideas, and discovering how to use computers to control events and program more complex solutions.
At the heart of our teaching is the aspect of using Learning to challenge students to imagine and design a solution to an open ended problem and to then create and communicate the solution for their identified audience. We expect students to create.
The students learn to use a variety of software packages and should be capable, by the end of Key Stage 3, of working independently with a computer to gain access to, manipulate, interrogate information and present their findings in a format suitable for use and audience. We encourage students’ to think for themselves and use a variety of tools in the solution of a task. They learn to use basic software tools; word processors, spreadsheets, databases, graphics software, internet software and Publishing software. They explore how to set up models and learn how to enter rules and instruction sets and we explore ways in which information can be communicated to others. In particular, students begin to appreciate how this information can be used to influence others. Finally, students study how computers are used to control and monitor their environments and begin to appreciate just how precise the instructions have to be.
In Key Stage 4 we aim to provide courses that stimulate more complex solutions and allow students to develop solutions over longer periods of time. This involves covering basic digital literacy skills where we also encourage preparation for the world of work, collaborative working and appreciation of the need to be professional in their use of modern communication tools. We also offer courses that allow students to develop skills for entry into computing related professions; whether this is through creative media or computer programming type courses.
