International Open Karate success

fullsizeoutput_6909Early October two St Peter’s Sixth Formers, Miquel (Year 13) and Harry (Year 12) were selected to be part of the squad representing All-Styles Karate Alliance Great Britain at the Irish Karate Association International Open Karate Competition, where 13 countries were participating. Miquel was very excited to compete in his first competition abroad and Harry was excited to go back having not taken part in the competition for over two years.

The Miquel and Harry have been participating in competitions through-out the year and were selected based on their performances in these and training. They flew from Birmingham to Dublin with the AKA National Squad. They had a day of watching the younger squad members compete on the Saturday and got an opportunity to do some training themselves. On the day of the competition, they each competed in three different categories, individual fighting, team fighting and individual kata, throughout the day and supported the other squad members.

Both boys did incredibly well and did themselves, their Karate Club and the school proud. Miquel came away with a silver medal in team fighting and Harry came away with a silver medal in individual fighting and a bronze medal in team fighting. “We both feel very proud having taken part in this competition representing our country. In the competition, we were able to use our knowledge from Anatomy and Physiology (from studying BTEC Sport) and this helped us compete more efficiently.”

Further congratulations go to Miquel and Harry who have both recently found out they’ve been selected for the 9th WUKF World Championships, in Poland, in 2020. We wish them every success for this and future competitions.
