On Friday 17 November, Year 12 politics class took taxis down to the Town Hall to participate in a Youth Parliamentary debate – an event put on by the council in line with Parliament Week (13-19 November). There were over 50 students present at the debate which was chaired by the Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Lawrence Williams, with our local MP Tobias Ellwood also present.
The event started at 12:30pm and covered two main issues; ‘Protect LGBT+ Rights’ and ‘A Curriculum to Prepare us for Life’ with these issues being decided by over 1,300 young people from a possible ten choices. The topics were well received and led to a good discussion being developed across all schools involved. As a result of the debate, the curriculum issue was decided to be the focus of Bournemouth’s Youth Committee for 2018 after a vote by those involved.
