Thinking of Teaching?
Are you interested in a teaching career?
Do you want to train as a school teacher and are looking for a practical training programme that is locally-based? St Peter’s works in partnership with a number of Initial Teacher Training providers which have an excellent track record of training teachers who then move on to employment in the local area. All of the training programmes leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a PGCE.
PRIMARY
St Peter’s is a placement school for the Primary Catholic Partnership (PCP) based in Southampton which trains teachers across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Isle of Wight. The PCP offers a variety of initial teacher training courses for those seeking to become primary and early years teachers. The partnership was established in 2000 by primary schools in the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth and has been graded outstanding by Ofsted since 2005. Trainees benefit from a small, friendly, supportive environment with a mix of ages and backgrounds. Lectures are delivered by outstanding practising teachers who have the credibility and skills needed to help you develop successful and relevant teaching strategies. Please see here for further information.
SECONDARY
The training providers are:
Southampton University: Two routes are available. The first is the Southampton University Partnership Alliance (SUPA) – this is a unique collaboration of secondary schools across Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire. Which is validated by the University of Southampton. In Bournemouth and Poole there are a cluster of schools that form the Dorset collaboration. Each school offers the opportunity to attend an event to learn more about SUPA and Teaching as a Career. See SUPA: Want to Teach Events below for upcoming dates.
The second option is traditional PGCE route which is University led or a Schools Direct pathway.
We also offer placements on a traditional PGCE route via Exeter University, which provides school-based experiences in term two and three. We also work with Portsmouth University for school-based experiences in term one and two.
St Peter's is also linked to Future Teachers (in association with Teaching Personnel) and United Teaching, delivered by a local school.
Training places are available in the following subjects, (although not all can include a placement at St Peter’s): Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Geography, Business, Modern Foreign Languages, IT, PE, Music, History, Dance, Drama and Art.
Some subjects attract training bursaries (depending on subject and degree qualification) ranging between £4,000 and £30,000. See here for further information regarding bursaries.
The teaching profession looks for the highest quality candidates, so you will need to meet the following requirements to be accepted on a training programme.
- GCSE Grade C/4 in English and Maths (or equivalent) and a good honours degree
Classroom experience is also beneficial – we can support you with this aspect if it is a requirement of the course.
Bournemouth Bay Partnership – The partnership is able to offer contrasting placements including comprehensive, grammar and special schools, and a link with the University of Reading for the award of PCCE.
Not all providers offer the same subjects, so you should check availability before applying.
